Over many years of practice, Alan has developed an Integrative approach in his psychotherapy practice and provides a tailored counselling service that aims to meet the needs of clients as discussed in the initial consultation.
Humanistic Approach – Person-centred therapy.
Building a safe, empathic, non-judgemental space where you feel comfortable sharing your thoughts and feelings is vital for effective therapy to take place and is at the heart of person-centred therapy. Active listening by the therapist is important in this approach to help you to know that you are genuinely understood. Feeling comfortable and accepted being your true self helps to build more self-confidence, a stronger sense of identity and greater trust in your own decisions.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
In addition, Alan is a qualified and experienced practitioner of CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) and SFBT (Solution focussed Brief Therapy). CBT looks at the interplay between our thoughts, emotions, behaviours and physical sensations. It looks at exploring potential negative thought patterns in a structured way and aims to challenge and reframe them gently with the therapist’s support. By doing so, uncomfortable or distressing emotional responses and behaviours experienced by the client can be resolved. CBT is well researched and shown to be effective in helping clients with anxiety, depression, phobias, PTSD and more.
Mindfulness, Relaxation and Emotional regulation.
Alan integrates Mindfulness, Relaxation, Meditation and Emotional Regulation where appropriate into his counselling practice which is particularly helpful where clients are struggling with stress, anxiety, panic, anger and trauma. Slowing the pace of our busy thoughts and being grounded and present in the “here and now” helps to bring both mind and body into a calm state.
